The creatures, plants, and fungi of the urban ecosystem are often perceived as playing a merely secondary role. In the Actors of the New Square exhibition, they have been put in the spotlight in the midst of the concrete-dominated square of Warsaw's cultural institution – The Nowy Teatr. The auditory ambiance of the place, the times of day, the intricacies of movement, and the complex ways in which humans, animals, plants, soil, concrete, and metal coexist were explored by musicians Mirt+Ter and Nowa Romantyka. Based on their field recordings, a sound-spatial installation titled Seasons of the Square was created, interpreting the inter-species cohabitation of the city center.
The Seasons of the Square installation serves as a space tailored for the reception of audio work. The structure of the theater lounge has been transformed into a central area for experiencing music, simultaneously fostering contemplation, tranquility, and rejuvenation.
The use of soft materials such as curtains and cushions, coupled with the lowered ceiling, diminishes reverberation, constructing a cozy atmosphere conducive to focus. Visitors can sit or recline on plush cushions. The use of subdued materials and yellow and green filters on the windows, which restrict the spectrum of incoming light from the outside, aids in quieting the senses beyond just hearing.
One of the project's key principles was working with existing materials and minimizing waste. Therefore, architectural elements were repurposed from found theater curtains. Once the installation concluded, they returned to their original functions.
