"States of Matter" is an intermedial artistic project of Maciej Chodziński. It explores the mechanisms and ways in which molecules are arranged in nature. The states that a substance can assume (gaseous, liquid, solid, conscious) differ in properties, but consist of the same finite number of components and are governed by common, universal laws. The overriding of these laws is the law of entropy.
The gallery, which was a former substation for electricity from the early 20th century, had an area of about 300 square meters and was about 17 meters high. The author designed both the artistic objects comprising the exhibition and their arrangement in space and lighting. The moving, reflective elements of the installation were illuminated by programmed stage lights synchronized with the sound created by the BNNT(http://www.bnnt.pl/) collective.
The approximately 20-minute sequence of sound and lights, set on a loop, was deliberately orchestrated to guide the audience through the installation space and underscore the cyclic nature of shifting states of matter, which constitute the central theme of the exhibition.
